Why Is Dallas a Good Place to Live?

Dallas’ Quality of Life

Your quality of life depends on many factors: health, material possessions, living conditions, social activity, and more. Dallas ranks high in all of them!

As far as climate goes, the weather here attracts residents who enjoy the warmth. Dallas experiences average temperatures above 65 degrees for seven months out of the year, four of those with averages above 80 degrees. Temps top out well into the 100s during the height of summer. (Don’t worry, businesses know how to crank up the A/C indoors.)

You’ll keep your health well under control with numerous active pursuits, both indoors and out, as well as a robust medical system for both adults and children. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Baylor University Medical Center, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and Medical City Children’s Hospital round out the four biggest care centers in this health-oriented metropolis.

In addition to the nice climate and a solid healthcare system, surrounding yourself with the right people will allow you to enjoy a full life. Dallas’ growing population boasts a whopping 1.3 million people. Thirty-five percent of residents hold a bachelor’s degree, higher than the average for Texas in general. Plus, WalletHub recently ranked Dallas as the fourth most diverse city in the United States, beating out big contenders, such as LA and Chicago. There are a lot of people here to get to know, and we’re a friendly bunch overall.

Things to Do in Dallas

From high culture to hole-in-the-wall, Dallas is a place of adventures.

We’ve got classic fun — Start with a morning exploring the beautiful Dallas Arboretum. Spend a few hours getting lost in the flagship Nieman Marcus store Downtown. Then, transition to a night of dinner and drinks in trendy Bishop Arts District.

We’ve got historic fun — Catch a flick at the Texas Theatre where police captured Lee Harvey Oswald. Visit the JFK memorial or the graves of Bonnie and Clyde. Connect with the past through one of the many amazing art collections available at the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Crow Collection of Asian Art.

We’ve got hipster fun—Start your day at the Dallas farmers’ market. Fill up your Instagram feed on the M Line Trolley down McKinney Ave. Collect one-of-a-kind artworks at the galleries in the Dallas Arts District. Top off your night by seeing your favorite local band take the stage in Deep Ellum.

We’ve got athletic fun—Catch up with your local running club near the Katy Trail or White Rock Lake. Challenge your friends to a game of disc golf in Oak Cliff or at Weischel Park. Spend the afternoon perfecting your downward facing dog at a yoga class in Klyde Warren Park.

We’ve even got fun so obscure you didn’t know you needed it in your life—Ever heard of the Adrian E. Flatt, M.D. Hand Museum? We thought not. But, it’s totally worth visiting this collection of bronze cast hands from celebrities, including Andre the Giant, housed at Baylor Medical Center.

In short, if you want to do it, it’s doable within DFW.

Dallas Cost of Living

Dallas is the perfect pick for a major metropolitan area that won’t break the bank. The cost of living in Dallas is less than half what you would spend in a city like New York or Los Angeles. It comes with all the perks of big city living without the burden of a hefty price tag.

Average salaries are high here. Combine that with taking home more of your paycheck (hello, no state income tax!), and you’ll easily afford the apartment of your dreams. Categories like utilities and food hover around the national averages. But, as we’ve seen above, there’s a lot to do around Dallas, so add a little to your recreation budget to leave room for exploration.

Dallas Job Market

From healthcare to technology to aviation to finance to every possible industry in between, Dallas welcomes career-minded professionals. In the past several years, Dallas has seen dozens of high-profile companies move their headquarters to the area, bringing with them thousands of job openings. And, as the quality of those jobs increases, so do the benefits. From 2015 to 2020, Dallas saw a 60% increase in the number of six-figure jobs available. Dallas truly is a land of opportunity.

How to Get Around

Getting around Dallas is pretty easy, thanks to its diverse transportation options. First, you can easily walk most of the neighborhoods. Apartment buildings are situated near grocery stores, restaurants, entertainment, and more, all within hoofing distance.

If you want to save some shoe leather, try the robust DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transport) bus and train lines. Service lines for trains converge downtown and reach almost every corner of the city, meaning you can hop on in Deep Ellum or Victory Park and ride all the way to Fort Worth, or even Denton.

Driving yourself is certainly an option as well. Downtown Dallas was actually built on a 45-degree grid, meaning many streets bisect cardinal directions instead of following them. Overlay that with traditional grid structures and you have the basic layout of Dallas and its surrounding area. The major innerbelt surrounding Dallas is 635 (technically the Lyndon B Johnson Freeway), while major N/S highways include the 75, Dallas North Tollway, and I-35.
