Considering a move from Boston to Atlanta? How exciting! We’re here to help with a few notable things to know about Atlanta before you head south, including how it differs from and how it’s similar to Boston. Although both cities reside on the East Coast, they’re unique in their own ways. Of course, in weather, but in lifestyle and housing, too.

Lifestyle
Atlanta is a bustling city with plentiful green spaces, phenomenal restaurants, and no shortage of things to do. Life here moves at a slightly slower pace than Boston, a welcome reprieve for many residents. Also, Atlanta’s warmer weather, particularly during the dog days of summer, means much milder winters. Restaurants still offer outdoor dining, even in January, and you won’t freeze your toes off (a major plus).
Boston – known for its historical architecture, cobblestone sidewalks, and density – shines with a luster of its own, whereas sprawling Atlanta extends 136 square miles. This southern city is known for its history and activism, lush tree coverage, music, and generous hospitality.
Housing
Atlanta’s rental market offers a ton of variety, from high-rise buildings in Midtown, to 1920s buildings in Cabbagetown, you’re sure to find one (or more!) that fit your preferences and lifestyle.
While most moves in Boston happen on September 1 each year, Atlanta’s more fluid market fluctuates in price and availability throughout the year. One of the best perks of renting in Atlanta is its breadth of amenities. From state-of-the-art gyms, to rooftop pools, complimentary coffee bars, and valet waste (waste pickup right outside your door), Atlanta’s apartment communities dazzle new residents.
With so many apartment communities in Atlanta, we recommend narrowing down your search to your favorite neighborhood(s). Our Neighborhood Guides can get you started.
Weather
The weather in Atlanta is noticeably different than in Boston, more so during the height of summer and the depths of winter. While Atlanta’s summer can feel brutal in comparison to Boston’s more mild summers, the clement winters will delight you.
The city gets its fair share of chilly days and nights, but remains warm enough that most restaurants still offer outdoor dining, and the BeltLine still buzzes with cyclists, pedestrians, and lots of pups.
Traffic
While both cities offer multiple public transit options, Boston’s is a bit more robust because the city covers a much smaller geographical area. Cars aren’t as necessary in Boston as they are in Atlanta, where traffic can be rough. Try using alternative methods of transportation if you can – hop on the MARTA, or take advantage of the mild mornings and commute by bike or scooter.
Job Market
A variety of startups and established brands call Atlanta home. Think Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, The Home Depot, Mailchimp, and plenty more. It enjoys a booming tech scene, particularly with Microsoft and Apple opening offices here. It also has countless small businesses, creative entrepreneurs, artists, and more. In fact, the city expects to see continuous job growth in the coming years.
And, with the busiest airport in the world nearby, it makes a perfect homebase for anyone who travels frequently for work. A quick 15-minute drive from downtown means more time at home and less time commuting to the airport.
