Where to Ski Near Denver
Loveland
Distance from Denver: 80 miles, 1.5 hours
A favorite of locals due to its close proximity to Denver, Loveland Ski Area offers no lodging onsite, making it perfect for day trips and then hitting up the Denver night scene. Loveland is one of the highest sites in terms of elevation, with its base at nearly 11,000 feet. You can choose from one of ninety-plus trails on the 1,800 acres of terrain along the Continental Divide.
Loveland’s many trails serve skiers of all levels. Intermediate and advanced skiers can enjoy free cat skiing, which allows them to explore pristine backcountry areas. And, there is a separate area for beginners called Loveland Valley, as well as a Ski & Ride School for true beginners.
Winter Park
Distance from Denver: 66 miles, 80 minutes
Winter Park, one of the most affordable ski resorts in Colorado, sits on over 3,000 acres of award-winning terrain and offers breathtaking views of the mountains. Winter Park operates runs for all skill levels and snow tubing for anyone who just wants to take it easy. Visitors can explore over 160 different trails across the Seven Territories of Winter Park.
Although near enough to Denver to drive home after a day on the slopes, many locals stay onsite to enjoy the spa, restaurants, and other winter activities. The resort stays open year-round, attracting hikers and bikers during the off-season.

Arapahoe Basin
Distance from Denver: 64 miles, 80 minutes
Locally known as A-Basin, Arapahoe Basin ranks as one of the premiere skiing destinations in Denver, yet also one of the more affordable. Its summit reaches 13,050 feet, giving it some of North America’s highest elevation. A-Basin is not for the faint of heart because of its challenging terrain, but it does offer a beginner’s slope. Arapahoe Basin has one of the longest ski seasons, lasting well into June.
Another favorite of locals, Arapahoe Basin does not offer much by way of on-site amenities, and they do not provide overnight lodging. However, A-Basin does host a number of free community events throughout the year, including contests and prizes.
Echo Mountain
Distance from Denver: 36 miles, 50 minutes
Although small in size, Echo Mountain is one of the closest slopes to Denver and one of the few places in Colorado that offers night skiing and snowboarding. This mountain primarily caters to intermediate skiers, but contains a beginners area called Yard Sale as well. One chair lift serves a variety of blue, green, and black runs of over 600 vertical feet. They recently opened a dedicated tubing hill as well.
Echo Mountain works well for the day skier or the occasional skier, allowing you to hit the slopes and get back to Denver quickly. It is also a great place to bring out-of-town guests who don’t ski often.
Copper Mountain
Distance from Denver: 77 miles, 80 minutes
Locals love Copper Mountain’s casual vibe. This area offers runs for all ski levels as well as a terrain park with a superpipe, mini pipe, and other fun features. You can learn the basics at the on-site ski school. Or, have a blast ice-skating, snowshoeing, and snow-tubing in between runs.
Copper Mountain consists of three different villages: East, West, and Center, each with its own lodging and dining options, making it perfect for quick weekends away. They plan no shortage of activities throughout the ski season, including skiing, tubing, and X games contests. Copper Mountain is also known for its holiday celebrations with live music.
