What Makes Dallas a Good Place to Live for Young Professionals?

Move over, Austin and Houston. Dallas is the new place to be for young professionals who want amazing work opportunities coupled with a fun, modern lifestyle. Distinct neighborhoods, each boasting its own vibes, permeate this vibrant city. From the trendy and exciting Deep Ellum, to the family-friendly Northeast Dallas, there’s a place for everyone in the DFW area.

And, there’s a job for everyone. The Dallas-Fort Worth area gained almost 243,000 jobs last year, which translates to a 6.1% growth rate compared to the national average of 3.2%. Multiple Dallas companies appear on the Fortune 500 list, and exciting new businesses are starting up across the metroplex all the time.

If you plan to grow your career here, check out these neighborhoods where young professionals can work and play in Dallas.

Best Areas to Live in Dallas for Young Professionals

Downtown Dallas

If you want to work with the big dogs, you’ll want to work in Downtown Dallas. Fortune 1,000 companies in the downtown area include AT&T, Energy Transfer, CBRE, Builders FirstSource, HF Sinclair, Jacobs, EnLink Midstream, Primoris Services, and Comerica. Young professionals flood into companies like these ones to start making their mark on the future of business. Downtown Dallas provides the perfect opportunities for hungry young professionals looking to climb the corporate ladder.

You can live right downtown, too, and have everything at your fingertips. Downtown living is all about the luxury high-rise lifestyle. Apartments vary between classic and industrial styles. Most buildings offer rooftop pools and verandas from which to watch the sun setting over the city you love. Whether you’re living in the historic West End, the entertaining Arts District, or the relaxed Farmers’ Market area, you’ll enjoy the downtown lifestyle.

Medical District

No matter what aspect of healthcare you specialize in, the Medical District will accommodate you. Situated between Downtown and Love Field, the area is punctuated by UT Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland Health, and Children’s Medical Center Dallas. Doctors, nurses, administrators, billing specialists, and more can all find work in this thriving neighborhood dedicated to health and wellness.

The neighborhood itself is a wonderful place to live as well as work. Medical District apartments are modern, conveniently located next to the medical campuses, and adjacent to conveniences, such as Love Field, DART lines, and popular hotspots in Trinity Groves. With the wildly fluctuating schedules of medical professionals, it’s nice to know that others might also be up at 3am, and a grocery store or restaurant might be open when you need it.

Plano

A straight shot up the DNT or 75, and you’ll find yourself in the world of Plano. This neighborhood is a great place to work. From boutique small businesses to major manufacturers to telecoms giants to any other industry you can imagine, Plano companies will post job ads that fit you. Major companies like Toyota and NTT Data have moved or expanded their headquarters to Plano in recent years as well.

Plano is also an amazing place to live, offering all the luxuries of life closer to downtown, while retaining the relaxed suburban lifestyle of far north Dallas. If you want a night out on the town, head to the Shops at Legacy. If you want some fresh air, try Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve. Apartments in Plano vary widely, which is great because it means you’ll more easily find a place that has everything you want.

West Dallas

West Dallas, including the popular Trinity Groves area, is a mecca for the trendy, urban professional. It sits close to the Design District, the Medical District, and Kessler (where the Bishop Arts District is), which makes it perfect for taking advantage of all Dallas has to offer and all the jobs nearby. It’s also a great place to find an apartment.

Way back in 2009, West Dallas residents began the revitalization of this area by renaming Industrial Boulevard into Riverfront Boulevard. And, the riverfront is spectacular here. Trails, rock climbing walls, and more border the Trinity River from Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge to the Continental Avenue pedestrian bridge. There’s plenty of future development planned here, too, with a lagoon and 2,100 apartment units currently being built.

South Dallas/Fair Park

Right next to concentrated Deep Ellum sits sprawling Fair Park. This area features both the State Fair of Texas fairgrounds and the Dos Equis Pavillion concert venue. South Dallas is a great place for young workers who want access to offices and entertainment, but don’t necessarily want to live in the center of the action.

The area is up and coming as more investors take notice of the neighborhood, including the development of an 18-acre park complete with a dog park, outdoor cafes, and an inclusive playground.

Uptown

Downtown, meet Uptown. This neighborhood is the place to be seen for young Dallas professionals. Uptown is situated between multiple neighborhoods, from Turtle Creek to Knox-Henderson to Downtown. This makes commuting to your nearby work or entertainment a breeze.

Uptown is also a great place to live. Finding an apartment here is like choosing ice cream at Baskin Robbins—there are dozens of flavors for the picking. Apartment styles range from industrial high-rises to classic apartment homes.
