How to Meet People & Find Community
The best part about moving to Austin alone is that everyone’s doing it! Most of the people you’ll meet relocated from somewhere else. In fact, native Austinites are referred to as “unicorns” because they’re mythical creatures that pretty much don’t exist. Since everyone is new here, or was at some point, everyone has been in the same boat: living in a new place, looking for new opportunities, and wanting to meet new people. That explains why everyone here is incredibly friendly and inviting.
There are several ways to make friends in Austin. First, take advantage of social media. Look for Facebook groups relating to Austin and any interest, including groups for people new to Austin, Austinites who like to hike, Austin book clubs, and more.
You know those dating apps you swore you’d never touch again after one too many bad first dates? Well, don’t hang up the towel just yet. Instead of using the apps for romantic purposes, try using Bumble BFF to meet friends. This tried and true method of meeting people here in Austin actually works.
Lastly, check out one of the many fitness classes taking place daily throughout the city. Start up a conversation with the next yoga matt over and discover just how friendly everyone is.
How to Get Around
Many residents of Downtown Austin find that owning a car is more of a hassle than a necessity because you can easily get around town without one. Plentiful and inexpensive Ubers and Lyfts will get you across town in no time. For a more exciting, and even cheaper option, you can scooter to your target location. “Bird” scooters can be found on almost every street corner. Plus, if you live downtown, you’re almost always within walking distance to your next destination.
Fun Things to Do

There’s truly never a dull moment in Austin. With countless activities to do at any time of year, and the many events taking place each month, you’ll never feel bored living in this city.
We especially love the music festivals that happen throughout the year. From Austin City Limits in October, to South by Southwest (SXSW) in March, to this year’s iHeartRadio Country Music Festival, you can always look forward to a live event. Not to mention, Austin happens to be the Live Music Capital of the World, meaning countless bars and music venues offer live shows every night of the week.
In the summer months, temperatures can reach upwards of 90-100 degrees. You are in Texas, after all! But don’t worry, we know the best ways to beat the heat in Austin. Try renting a paddleboard from one of the many shops throughout the city and heading out onto Lady Bird Lake. You’ll meet tons of fellow boarders and see the occasional concert on the water. We also suggest getting a group of your new friends together and renting a boat to take out onto Lake Travis. Most boat rentals even come with a driver, so you can spend the day sitting back and relaxing on the water.

Spectacular Views of the City
With a city as beautiful as Austin, it’s only right that there be several spots to take in the views of Downtown and the water. One of our favorite spots to grab a drink with friends and take in the views is P6. We love their specialty cocktails and charming decor. Another favorite spot is Zanzibar. Once you step into this restaurant, it will transport you to the jungle. Plus, they serve up deliciously unique food to go with those views alongside even better drinks.
The great part about living in or near Downtown Austin is that many apartment complexes offer incredible views as well. Whether you’d like a view of the skyline, the water, or the surrounding hill country, the possibilities abound in our charming city.
