How Julia Thompson Made Her Real Estate Dream a Reality

What did you do before you came to AptAmigo?
I won’t say where, but I had a job in publishing that I absolutely hated. My title was “Account Coordinator” (whatever that means), and I basically sat in solitude and stared at my computer all day waiting for the next email to arrive. I was just a robot.
More specifically though, it was my job to coordinate the creation of ads in a magazine that nobody reads. It sucked.
Why apartment locating and why now?
In all honesty, it just seemed like a really fun job. And it is!
Helping people find their dream apartment? It doesn’t get better. Plus, a lot more people are renting now versus buying, so there is a lot of opportunity right now in the rental market.
What about AptAmigo appealed to you?
The company has a fresh outlook on, not only the rental market, but also the corporate work environment. The culture at AptAmigo is both competitive and laid back. We learn from our losses and celebrate our wins together, which creates a very supportive environment. Resources like the onboarding process, operations coordinators, and touring agents were a huge draw for me as well.
What’s your favorite part about this job?
The money. The people. The flexibility. But, mostly the money.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in apartment locating?
Know your goals in the real estate industry. Whether you want to make a career out of leasing, or eventually plan to move to buy/sell, AptAmigo is the perfect place to start.
The hardest part about real estate is finding clients, so find a place that has a great network of clients. At AptAmigo, we form true and long-lasting connections with our clients, who trust us with their rental needs, but also go on to work with us when it comes time to buy their forever home. Real estate is a long-term game!
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in this job, and how did you overcome it?
Sometimes people will lie right to your face about their intentions in the search process. The only way to avoid liars is to build strong communication skills. Being able to evaluate a client’s communications and picking up on the traits or giveaways of someone who will waste your time is also key.
Describe your biggest accomplishment since beginning this position, or a time when you felt really successful. What did that experience mean to you?
My biggest accomplishment would definitely be achieving financial freedom. A 1099 position is a hard adjustment, but once made, it is the most rewarding experience. I genuinely love my job, and most days I don’t feel like I have a job, which is an absolute blessing.
