What to Do on Your First Visit Before Moving to San Antonio

The Alamo

On a list of places to visit in San Antonio, its most iconic historical landmark, the site that most defines this city’s character, must come first. Texas history comes to life when you spot the Alamo, which happens to be situated right downtown. The most well-known of the Spanish Missions created by the Roman Catholics in the 18th century, the Alamo is the site of Texas’ victory over the Mexican army in 1836. You can either walk around solo and take in all of the sights, or attend a guided tour. Either way, it’s the perfect way to learn some American history. What’s great about its downtown location is that you’re only steps away from the next place on our list – the lively Riverwalk.

The Riverwalk

The historic Riverwalk may become the main selling point on your move to San Antonio. Here, you’ll find all sorts of energetic bars and restaurants lining the slow, streaming river. Head to this waterfront to grab a bite to eat before hopping on a boat tour that will slowly take you down the river while explaining some of the city’s history. You’ll go back again and again after moving to this city and even bring all of your out-of-town guests.

Pearl

For a more tranquil place, head to The Pearl District. This former brewery complex transitioned into the perfect afternoon hangout spot. It consists of a spacious green area for soaking up the sun as well as restaurants, a butcher, a bakery, and more. Within the district, you’ll also find shops and bars, making this a go-to spot for all of your basic needs.

Japanese Tea Garden

Speaking of tranquility, you can find peace and quiet in abundance at the Japanese Tea Garden. Like a traditional botanical garden, you’ll gaze upon plenty of plants, lush flowers, and wildlife. However, the koi ponds, picturesque stone bridges, and a 60-foot waterfall make this garden extra special. Experience nature’s beauty within the city limits at this one-of-a-kind destination.

La Villita Historic Village

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, La Villita is a gem in the heart of San Antonio. Once an actual “little village,” this site blossomed into a one-of-a-kind cultural hub. Take in the historic architecture as you peruse artisan shops, dine at fantastic eateries, and view local artworks. A place to find unique flavors and handmade goods is a place that gets our stamp of approval every time.

The Missions

In the 18th century, Catholic religious orders built five missions throughout San Antonio in order to introduce their religion, farming, and lifestyle to the local communities. Now, tourists and locals can explore the missions on foot, two wheels, or four wheels. Learn about the history of each one while taking in the architecture and nature of the surrounding area.

See a Spurs Game

If you visit San Antonio during basketball season, you won’t want to miss the experience of a Spurs game. You don’t need to be a fan to appreciate the players hard at work. But, there’s a good chance you’ll leave cheering on your new home team.

Eat Tex-Mex Food

It comes as no surprise that San Antonio’s neighbors to the south influence its culture and, especially, its food. Texan and Mexican flavors meet in perfect harmony in Tex-Mex food, which River City serves up in abundance. Check out Rosario’s, Mi Tierra, and Rita’s On the River for an introduction to this regional cuisine.

Head to the Rodeo

Despite all of the Mexican influences, you are still in Texas, and being in Texas means rodeos. If you come to town for rodeo season — early to mid-February — you won’t want to miss the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Get in on the fun of the fair, livestock shows, concerts, and, of course, some barrel racing and bull riding. This Texas tradition, a lively event that you’ll want to go back to year after year, will hook you in like a lasso.

Dance at a True Texas Dancehall

Pick up a pair of cowboy boots from a local shop and polish them up for a night of two-stepping and line dancing. Another classic Texas tradition, there’s nothing quite as unique and exciting as a night out at a dancehall. Don’t worry if you’ve got two left feet; most of them offer lessons. Two of the best in town are Thirsty Horse and Cowboys.
